Inspiring Kids Through Play

Doctor Rubber A Serious Game for Playful Learning

How do you teach kids about recycling and the importance of rubber waste while keeping them entertained? For Hogeschool Windesheim, we developed Doctor Rubber, an interactive AR tablet game designed to educate children at events about the composition of car tires and the value of sustainability.

With a mix of augmented reality and hands-on challenges, the game engages children in an exciting mission: to diagnose and repair a “sick” car tire by collecting its missing components. It’s learning made fun, combining technology, play, and purpose.

The Challenge

Windesheim wanted to inspire children to explore technology and engineering through an educational experience. Traditional methods often struggle to compete with children’s love for games and interactivity. The challenge was to design an experience that:

  • Captures kids’ attention in a busy event setting.
  • Teaches sustainability and recycling in an engaging way.
  • Inspires curiosity about technology and its practical applications.

Our Solution

We designed Doctor Rubber, a tablet-based game that brings education and fun together:

  • Augmented Reality Immersion: The sick tire comes to life in the child’s environment, creating an interactive, lifelike experience.
  • Engaging Gameplay: Players use an X-ray mode to diagnose the tire, then race against time to collect missing parts at the event stand.
  • Hands-On Learning: Each collected part teaches players about the materials and components of a car tire, emphasizing the importance of recycling and sustainability.

The Impact

Doctor Rubber has been a powerful tool for Windesheim, connecting with children in an unforgettable way:

  • Higher Engagement: Kids spent more time interacting with the booth, fully immersed in the game.
  • Learning Through Play: Children left with a greater understanding of sustainability and the importance of recycling.
  • Inspiration for the Future: The game sparked curiosity in engineering and technology, helping Windesheim connect with the next generation of talent.

Why It Worked

Doctor Rubber succeeded because it tapped into what kids love most: fun, interactivity, and challenge. For this project, we applied our eight motivational pillars.

These pillars are just part of our broader 8-pillar approach, which ensures every project we create is immersive, engaging, and effective.

Want to know how we can make learning fun for your audience?

1. Playful Learning

By combining augmented reality with a hands-on challenge, the game turned learning into a fun and rewarding experience.

2. Curiosity Activation

Kids were drawn to the lifelike AR tire and the process of diagnosing and repairing it, sparking their interest in how things work.

3. Achievement Through Action

The timed nature of the game and the visible progress of “healing” the tire kept players motivated to complete the challenge.
